In our eighth year as Team Tempest, we continue to grow. We promote our now eleven competitive LEGO teams from our partner schools. We mentor each team and travel with them to the championship competition. Our single Junior LEGO school from Nativity BVM continues to grow at now six teams. Our members attend each session and mentor this team as they create a city. The team has expanded to implement CAD, Autodesk Visualization and finally submit our website.
We are most proud of the Outreach program we have created called the “Pillowcase Project”. In this program, we work with our third graders of partner schools to prepare them for emergencies such as fire, tornado, but mostly hurricanes. As a team that was born the year of Hurricane Katrina, we strive to make hurricane safety and preparedness an issue for our community. We are also very proud of the extent of impact our program has on our seniors as they graduate. Last year’s graduates received $7.5 million dollars in scholarship offers. The impact of FIRST robotics is very evident.
Year 2011 was extremely successful and we feel we have raised the team to a new level. As Bayou Regional Champions, we brought home the banner and won the Engineering Inspiration Award, traveling to St. Louis. In this past season, we were asked to sponsor a LEGO Qualifying Tournament for the state of Mississippi. We hosted the Lighthouse Regional Qualifying Tournament for 22 teams. By the way, six of our active partner schools which we directly mentor all advanced to the State Championship in March. With 2013 as our rookie year for FTC, we have won the State Tournament in 2013 and the Qualifying Tournament in 2014. The State Tournament is February 7-8.
